Excellence waiting to be called

Bagger Vance is carrying the bag of Randolph Junah and talking about how to find the perfect shot that is needed at any specific time.  He tells him, “With each shot you can have a duff, a top, or a shank all of these are waiting to happen, but you also have great shots – excellence is waiting to happen.” (I paraphrase several ideas.) What is important is for the golfer to pick from the many choices his own excellence based upon his authentic swing.  This is the most common theme in the book The Legend of Bagger Vance; to use your swing and to find excellence by having no fear and by being willing to surrender your expectations to the unknown.

Is there any difference in a sales person’s day (or any other working person) to that of a golfer?  Do you not face the same challenges of finding the right words to get an appointment, to get a sale, to save a lost account? All the right things are waiting for you to choose – great golfers practice many aspects of the game of golf, great selling requires the same.  Have no fear – stop talking to the ball and enjoy what happens.

If you ever want to see why it is important not to talk to the ball, look back at the 1999 Ryder Cup, when Justin Leonard sank a 45 foot putt to win his match and clinch the cup for America.  Would it have been more dramatic if it were 5 feet or 10? Does it matter that it was 45?  What mattered was he had the ability, because he was good enough to be on the team. What mattered was he was in the game and did not quit. Too often people forget their greatness, too often people lose sight of how to be great – you can see this in golfers who have one or two great years and then drop from sight. It happens in business too.  If you do not become more confident as you get older, then you learned the wrong life lesson.  If you have a desire to become more confident – get a coach.

The Zen masters say, "One day with a master is better than reading 1000 books."  You can improve your sales and develop a life long strategy that puts you in the 20% category.
