If you had seen this you would be rich today! Have you stood in a line at the airport, post office or a store and heard a cell phone ring; then watched as several people looked to see if it was them or you? Every phone had or has one or two sounds, until someone decided to give people a choice. That someone sold 24 million dollars of unique sounds, downloaded from their Internet site, in the first year. The person that did this was a good observer of the things that drive people crazy and they made money from it. Rule 2 The ability to observe problems is a skill people learn or it is a gift that they exploit. The ones with the gift are successful entrepreneurs the ones who lean it work for them. An example is Starbucks, why didn't Folgers or Maxwell House start a gourmet coffee shop? Allowing people to be observers Not every company allows their employees to be observers, to share what they see or to take action. I once worked with a company that told me, "We have not done much with this part of the market, but the change in the economy forces us in a new direction. We need help in delivering to this market." Two years later they sold a years worth of business in 30 days to this market. First they asked questions then they created solutions. This is the second rule of 20% companies. Ask action questions then take action. Another example of allowing people to share growth ideas came from a man that sold a well known company making auto accessories. He said, "The new owners are doing dozens of things we thought about, but nobody wanted to take on. Just one of those ideas was a big leap." The owners at Starbucks have done the same thing, listening to what is missing and filling the needs of untapped markets. There is a language of action that when put in place by a company or when used by sales people with customers changes results. It is so easy, but this language of action takes a willingness to learn and to implement. People that use the language of action, to be an observer, grow and find markets that make them a 20% company. An example is a Mexican company selling building materials. One day they realized that women could sell their products not to construction companies but to future homeowners. In five years they had a worldwide operation that looks like Avon ladies. This company was trained in the language of action. |
