80-20 Companies have Rules for Implementation

Rule 3

While watching a motivation video about Olympic athletes, one man told how he was having trouble throwing. His first two throws of the javelin where so poor that he would not earn a medal.  Then a friend started a chant in the stands, “Follow through Bob. Follow Through Bob.” On his last throw he did follow through and won the Olympic Gold medal.  Too few people in business have someone who will support them in the follow through on new ideas. History is changed when friends and coworkers embrace a problem to create solutions.

People want to change but not much

The key to why people fail to have success with diets is not will power or food addiction or any number of tired old ideas; the reason people fail is homeostasis.  Homeostasis is that miracle of the body that controls your body temperature and has you sweat if your are hot, shiver if you are cold.  Homeostasis does not want more than a 10% change at any one time and if you change more than that it will pull back until 10% or less is achieved. The Rule of Change is the last rule of 20% companies. No idea matters if you don’t implement it.

One of the valuable tools of 20% companies is that they build competence in change so that they can change policies or procedures whenever it appears that a present action drives people crazy. Grocery stores are always making room for new products and replacing old ones, but the milk is still in the back of the store.

Homeostasis is a tool to consider in your daily life or at your company. What do you want to change? What will stay the same? Remember that change in yourself or in your company will change history and that it is not always easy.

Be more Visual

One of the failures of 80% companies is that they have poor visual displays of the things they want people to know. Part of what can make implementation work well is for people to be able to see what is the end goal. In the declaration of independence Thomas Jefferson wrote, “We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal.” One of the visuals that often is displayed with this statement is the signature of John Hancock. But even 200 years after this statement not all men in all countries are either treated equal or feel they are equal.  So just because something is started does not mean it will end soon.  This is the next part of the rule, be patient.  Tell people how far you have come and where you are going.

Negotiate everything

The language of action and the language of implementation include the ability to be good at negotiation, this takes training.  A company or a sales person that wants to win the most has to have good negotiation skills. Having a common language, at a company, for negotiation will allow everyone to have input to the process of change.

Most people do not feel they have the power to make change in themselves or their company. 20% companies give away the power. People come to managers with ideas and solutions are negotiated. When it happens from time to time in a company that is luck when it happens by intention that is Mastery.

If you or your company would like to have the language tools that create action and separate yourself from the other 80% give me a call.

The reason we have this training program is someone taught me years ago, I've used it dozens of times with a wide range of companies each with different circumstances, but all with great results.
