Get a Coach
A mentor stands at your goal and shows you how to get there.
A couple of years ago Inc. Magazine interviewed Scott Cook, the founder of Intuit - the Quick Books company. Here are excerpts of three rules he has about running a business.
"One, behave humbly. Be humble about your importance, about how many answers you know and about how much you
don't know (which is always more than you think)
"Two, get a coach. Because people aren't going to tell the boss what you need to know about yourself.
"And lastly," Cook says, "realize that to a scary degree a company grows to reflect its founder.
One thing about his last idea is that the reason for having a coach is to make sure that the scary things in your
company - your ideas and business work does not slow the growth of others and yourself. That is the reason for having a coach.
During the past ten years some of my customers have been lawyers and MBAs running companies. They have been people
with master degrees in their chosen field. At one large hotel chain - during a management retreat, the senior manager, while working, on an exercise about trust, asked this question, "Why haven't we learned this before?" Not everything you learn in business school or college
will be applied to your business or personal life. Even great companies need mentors. People with a fresh outlook of their life.
Here is another excerpt by Scott Cook, Don't you think there's a reason that even superhuman athletes, the best in the world, always have
coaches? If you wish to grow in your business and personal life it may be time for you to follow the advice of a successful business leader.
Here is a recent comment by one of my customers -
Thank you, Brad, for those encouraging words.
Your affect on me over the past years has been positive in more ways than I have presently have time to enumerate. I often think of what you have said when I find myself in various situations.
