Who uses a coach and why?

Sitting in front of the TV or in the stands, it is easy to see your favorite team play football, baseball, basketball or any other team sport and expect the players to go to the coach for help. Are team sports the only place people have coaches?  Do you think of a doctor as a coach? The point of a coach is someone that has a stake in helping you to be better and who can contribute, often inspite of your efforts to ignore the advice.

In the Inc. magazine article about Scott Cook, he said, "Get a Coach because people are not going to tell the boss what you need to know about yourself. Bad news never travels all the way to the top. So get someone that makes demands, who helps you, and criticizes you and holds you accountable. Don't you think there is a reason that even superhuman athletes, the best in the world, always have coaches?"

I made the argument in my book, Lower Your Golf Score Increase Your Sales that there are two ways to get coaching, one is to have someone to help and the other is to use Act as a coaching tool.  You use it's features to prompt you to follow a certain plan or to ask important questions.

In the testimonials on this web site, which are a pdf file format, you can see that the very first business owner is an example of how coaching gives a seasoned business person new eyes to see his opportunities. We set a one year goal in 6 areas of Tom Hinz business and personal life. He had surpassed most of them in 6 months.  Coaching and training gives people New Eyes. It allows you to see those things that others don't mention or they are uncomfortable discussing.

Are friends a good coach?

One difference between a coach and a friend is the number of people they see that they can give reasoned advice.  In 10 years of coaching I have talked to hundreds of sales people and dozens of business owners and mangers. Just the volume of this work has allowed me to see what works and what does not work. This takes away trial and error and shortens the cycle of change. Again looking at the testimonial from Tom Hinz he mentions he has a partner, many would think that is all the help people in business need, someone to bounce an idea off of to get feedback.  That is not what coaching does. A coach is someone that is encouraging and has the skill to see what others miss.  That is why someone like Bill Parcells can lead several teams to success often using players that others could not use effectively.

Napoleon Hill wrote several famous books on success.  He maintained that having a circle of master minds allows the motivated person to draw on ideas when in need.  This coaching idea has worked for thousands of people and will continue to work because it is part of the Rules of life.  Get a coach and you will leap past your competition.

Good luck and great selling.
